FIELD NOTES / 01 · CHANNEL STRATEGY
Xiaohongshu or Dianping? Start with how customers decide.
For a Singapore business reaching Chinese consumers, the question is often less about adding a platform and more about where customers should discover you—and what happens next.
A practical starting point
Assess Xiaohongshu when the immediate need is brand discovery and product storytelling. Assess Dianping when you need to help people researching restaurants, offers or visit information. This is a planning starting point, not a fixed definition of either platform. Audience, industry, resources and available products still matter.
Put the channels in one customer journey
Consider a restaurant: a traveller may first discover a dish or atmosphere through content, then look up the address, menu and opening hours before reserving or visiting. Attractive content and accurate business information should be planned together.
| Planning question | Xiaohongshu | Dianping |
|---|---|---|
| Question to answer | Why would someone become interested in the brand? | How can someone decide whether to buy or visit? |
| Content focus | Occasions, experiences, product strengths and useful shareable information | Business details, menus or products, location and terms |
| What to prepare | A clear story and sustainable content resources | Accurate information, relevant offers and operational readiness |
| Signals to review | Relevant reach, saves, engagement and trackable enquiries | Detail actions, enquiries or reservations, purchases and redemptions |
With a limited budget, solve one clear problem
If your existing account lacks basic information and useful content, build that foundation first. If enquiries already arrive but repeatedly ask about location, prices or reservations, improve the information and handoff. More platforms should not simply stretch the same limited resources thinner.
Keep different signals distinct
An impression is not a visit, a save is not a purchase, and a sold voucher is not a redemption. Agree on sources, periods and trackable objectives before starting. State measurement gaps instead of filling them with assumptions.
